Bio
Michael Bruce is the department chair of Journalism and Creative Media and a tenured associate professor. He also serves as the director of UA's Digital Media Center, overseeing WVUA-TV and Alabama Public Radio.
He was recruited to Alabama in 2011 to help start an undergraduate concentration in sports media. In addition, he has taught graduate research method courses and has served on numerous committees including the undergraduate curriculum committee and the production committee. Prior to moving to Alabama, Bruce worked in the Division of Communication Arts at Oklahoma Baptist University for 13 years in a faculty/staff position.
Bruce is active as both a research and creative scholar. He, and colleague Chandra Clark have recently released their feature-length documentary project, Do Right: The Stallings Standard. His creative scholarship also includes various short-form video and television projects. An accomplished live television director, he has more than 200 sporting/live event credits. His research is centered on risk and crisis communication, with a particular emphasis on Arab media.
Bruce is involved with a number of professional and academic organizations, most notably BEA (Broadcast Education Association). He served on the BEA board of directors for 10 years, including President of the board of directors in 2017-2018. He is currently chair of the Council of Communication Associations.
